Location Based Learning: An Experimental Learning Method Mediated by Mobile Platforms

Course Description:

This course will focus on the applicability of Location Based Services, which are based on Mobile Platforms, for educational purposes. It will address the radical change that mobile technology has effected as a result of the physical contextualization of learning, empowered by the Internet. This change permits Experimental Learning, which is based on Constructivist pedagogy with the Personalization of learning. It utilizes information technology that enables and/or facilitates learning while referring to a given spatial area as an LCMS (Learning Content Management System).
Keeping in mind that both advanced mobile platforms ("smartphones" and tablet computers) connected to the web (3G and WIFI) and simpler devices connected to cellular networks (2G – SMS etc.) are extremely cheap and are rapidly spreading around the world, it is clear that Pedagogy and Methodology are not necessarily planned to improve only Formal Teaching in educational systems, but can also aim to enable informal, chaotic, idiosyncratic, and WEB 2.0 learning.

Teaching Methodology in the Course:

The course will integrate three main learning experiences:
  1. Creation and implementation of a location based curriculum
Hands-on experience in implementing location based methodology. Creating this experience in a local manner ensures that knowledge, skills, and values have a chance to be practiced and re-evaluated, while preserving the authenticity of the process.
  2. Participation in a social learning environment
Concepts, philosophy, bibliography, filmography, etc., will be collaboratively created, annotated, reviewed and discussed by the participants in this course and others, who are taking part in a social learning experience and making use of a web 2.0 learning environment. This process will ensure that the participants can learn via their own learning style and tools. In addition, their learning experience can enrich and be enriched by other learners. This learning environment can become a support center for peers during the course and possibly after it, since it remains a live environment.
  3. Support and teaching by experts
Shani Ziv and David Lachmish, instructional designers by profession and developers of methodologies embedded into location based learning applications, will lead these learning processes. They will teach and support the learners as a group and as individuals.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to:
  1. Use the location based learning curriculum they created.
  2. Implement the social learning skills they acquired during the course:
    a. Wiki–editing (all Media Wiki platforms, including Wikipedia)
    b. Collaborative reading of texts
    c. Social bookmarking
    d. Using computerized maps created by multiple users
    e. Learning applications of social networks
  3. Use the group to continue discussion and learning
  4. Use the Idiosyncratic learning environment to participate in the conceptualization of location based learning

Specific Course Requirements:

  1. Pre-course self evaluation form
  2. Willingness to share content with your local community
  3. Participation in web 2.0 learning environment

Hardware and Software Requirements:

"Smartphone" / Tablet Computer (a mobile device connected to the Internet)

Assessment and Grading:

Evaluation model
Evaluation is based mainly on the learners’ ability to create and use (teach with) a location based curriculum. The evaluation serves to give the learners a better understanding of the value of their work as perceived by their peers and their students.

a. Creation of a location based teaching unit
b. Local participants’ evaluation of the outcomes of the learning
c. Peer review
d. Teacher's review

Course Outline:

The basic unit of learning in this course is called a "term". The "term" is built in the following manner:

  1. DO
A practical mission that has to be accomplished. While participating in the course, learners are required not only to generate teaching materials, but also to practice and apply them themselves.
  2. Read & Write
A wiki environment that contains fundamental reading or viewing that learners upload, write, and comment on, term definition in which learners participate, associations to which learners contribute, and an annotated “bibliography” that learners comment on or edit.
We will conduct three synchronic sessions for term editing, each focusing on a term chosen by the group.
The structure is modular. Following the instructions in these terms in the order below will result in a curriculum:
location based learning
Generate LO:
  1. generate location based experiential Learning Object
  2. formal lecture online

Contextualize LO

  1. contextualize 1
  2. online concept editing
  3. contextualize 2
  4. contextualize 3
  5. generate route & game: generate narrative
  6. online concept editing

Generate LO ecolearning environment

  1. generate personalized activity: generate personalized experience, contextualize 4
  2. generate evaluated teaching activity: evaluate
  3. online concept editing
  4. formal lecture online
  5. generate learning community system: urban learning
  6. generate wandering and gaming application:

The "Wandering" Platform:

David Lachmish, together with Shani Ziv, are the developers of "The Wandering" platform for location based learning and are part of the idiosyncratic project. They are both instructional designers by profession. They hail from a humanistic educational background and have technological leanings. Their pedagogical perspective is mainly constructivist, especially in the web 2.0 developing environment. They have worked for a variety of organizations ranging from public service (leadership program development), health and industry, to the military, in both formal and informal education.
